Public transport is pretty reasonable around Portland, though for any of our European friends - it's not *THAT* good. We've got a number of options for getting around, the most useful (and part of why we chose the house we are in) is the MAX line, light rail, but the others are:

  • MAX Light Rail ($2.50/2h trip or $5/day)
  • Bus line (same fare works on bus and light rail)
  • Wes Commuter
  • Portland Streetcar

We live a 15-20 minute walk from a light rail station, so it's a viable way to get out here if you wear comfy shoes! There are a couple of gaps in the sidewalk, and you'll be walking through some grass on a dirt trail in one spot.

Rental Cars

Portland has the usual array of rental cars. A rental car may be cheaper than cab fare if you're coming in by plane, and gives you more ability to do things like check out Multnomah Falls or the beach (we recommend the train for the bookstore, though!)

Taxi Companies

[search for taxi companies in Portland, OR]

We have not had great success with the taxi companies out here -- J has been stuck waiting at the door for both lost or entirely missing cabs on several occasions -- but in theory they serve this area, and they're mostly fine during the day.

Uber / Lyft

Uber and Lyft both operate in Portland. They are generally a bit cheaper and more reliable than the local taxi companies, if you're into rideshare services.

Airport

If you're coming from the PDX airport:

  • The trip from PDX to Hillsboro via MAX takes around 1.5-2h, but only costs $2.50/person.
  • Cab fare can cost $90 before tip from PDX to Hillsboro.
  • Uber can be as low as around $50 depending on the time of day.
  • A rental car may be a viable alternative to cab fare. Driving takes around 30-40 minutes during non-rush-hour. You'll be following signs to Portland, then Beaverton, then Hillsboro.
